he Southern Californian Art Therapy Association, Inc. (SoCalATA) is a nonprofit organization committed to the support and promotion of art therapists and the field of art therapy in southern California. Art therapists of southern California are professionals who are trained in mental health care and in the use of art medias for the treatment and assessment of individuals experiencing illness, trauma, challenges in living, or seeking personal development. Art therapists work in schools, medical and psychiatric hospitals, residential treatment facilities, correctional facilities, outreach programs, nursing homes, and corporate structures, to name a few. SoCalATA is an affiliate chapter of the American Art Therapy Association, Inc. (AATA) which sets educational, professional, and ethical standards nationally. SoCalATA was founded in 1971 to support art therapists and the profession of art therapy on a local level. It shares AATA's dedication to the belief that the creative process involved in making art is healing and life enhancing. Its mission is to serve its members and the general public by supporting standards of professional competence, and developing and promoting knowledge in, and of, the field of art therapy within southern California. SoCalATA is dedicated to raising awareness and support of art therapists within the local community and increasing professional and educational opportunities for the art therapists of southern California.
